Tofu Bacon Topped Figs

Tofu bacon. Let's talk about it. No, it's definitely not real bacon, but it's salty and smoky and crispy like real bacon is. It makes the perfect topping for figs. The bacon is salty and the figs are sweet. Such a delicious combo.

I love how these lil apps are so cute and bite-sized. They are great if you want some delicious finger food. But you can also eat several as a side for a meal. The tofu has plenty of protein, so they're super filling.

These Tofu Bacon Topped Figs are super easy to make too. All you have to do is cook up the tofu bacon, then cook the figs in that same pan. Place a strip of bacon on each fig and you're done!

Tofu Bacon Topped Figs

Ingredients

  • Extra Firm Tofu: Use extra firm tofu for the crispiest bacon.
  • Liquid Aminos: The liquid aminos are part of the marinade for the tofu. Liquid aminos are salty which creates a delicious flavor for the bacon. Alternatively, you can use tamari.
  • Liquid Smoke: Liquid smoke is what it sounds like. It adds a deep smoky flavor to foods and it's the perfect ingredient to turn tofu into a bacon-like flavor.
  • Maple Syrup: We'll use the maple syrup both in the tofu marinade and as a cooking liquid for the figs.
  • Fresh Figs: Any variety of fig will work. It's okay if they aren't super ripe since they'll get cooked and softened.
  • Red Wine Vinegar: For a bit of tang to balance out the sweetness of the figs and maple syrup.

How to make Tofu Bacon Topped Figs

Step 1. Press the tofu using a tofu press or heavy pot for 10-15 minutes.

Step 2. Slice the tofu into thin, flat strips.

Step 3. Place in a glass container along with the liquid aminos, liquid smoke, and 1 tablespoon maple syrup. Let marinate for 10 minutes.

Step 4. Transfer the tofu (reserving any remaining marinade) to a non-stick pan and cook over medium heat for 10 minutes, until all sides are browned. Set aside.

Step 5. Add the fig to the pan cut side down along with the reserved marinade, remaining maple syrup, and red wine vinegar. Cook until the figs are soft and caramelized, about 5 minutes.

Step 6. Remove the figs from the pan, leaving any liquid in the pan. Arrange figs cut side up on a plate and place the tofu pieces on top of each fig.

Step 7. Drizzle the syrup over the figs. Enjoy!

Hi Becky - thanks for pointing this out. I have removed mention of vegetable broth from this post. You do not need any vegetable broth. The mushrooms will release natural liquid which will prevent any sticking.

thank you for the oil free recipe. I'm getting introduced to wild Bolete mushrooms here in Colorado, and everyone sautes Bolete's in butter or olive oil. I'm on a veggie, oil free regimen for heart health reasons. and your recipe suggestion may fill the bill. I can't wait to give it a try.
